Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was a prolific Hungarian performer, conductor, and composer. He reached the height of his compositional career during the late 20th century, and ultimately wrote over 200 works. Of these works, over 30 involve the horn in solo and chamber contexts. Hidas’s compositional trademark was his unique combination of both traditional and modern influences into pieces that are challenging yet rewarding to play. His compositions provide hornists the opportunity to perform in styles not often seen in the standard horn repertoire, while still maintaining some of its most hornistic characteristics. Additionally, Hidas’s jovial personality shines through his works, making them incredibly fun to play and listen to.
The goal of my research is to introduce the horn community to Hidas and the music that he wrote for horn, raise awareness and appreciation for his horn writing, and provide resources that improve accessibility so that his music can be programmed more on horn recitals all across the globe.
